Summary

Respiratory emergencies are a common presentation in acute care settings and require prompt recognition and management. With the ever-evolving evidence and recommendations regarding these conditions, it is imperative for practicing physicians to be updated with the latest best practices. However, there exists a recognized clinical practice gap in the diagnosis and management of such emergencies.

Respiratory emergencies, including Asthma, COPD exacerbations, Pneumonia, Pulmonary embolism, and Pneumothorax, account for a significant percentage of hospital admissions and emergency department visits annually. Efficient and evidence-based management of these emergencies can significantly improve patient outcomes.

Learning objectives

Diagnose and Differentiate: By the end of the session, participants should be able to competently diagnose specific respiratory emergencies and differentiate between conditions like Asthma and COPD exacerbations based on clinical presentations.

Initiate and Tailor Interventions: Attendees will be equipped to initiate appropriate first-line treatments for various respiratory emergencies and tailor interventions based on patient-specific factors and disease severity.

Utilize Diagnostic Tools: Participants should demonstrate proficiency in effectively using diagnostic tools such as imaging and lab tests to confirm and classify respiratory conditions like pneumonia and pulmonary embolism.

Coordinate Comprehensive Care: By the end of the session, attendees should be adept at organizing multidisciplinary care, recognizing when to involve other specialties or escalate care in the context of respiratory emergencies.

Evaluate and Adjust Treatment: Participants will develop the competency to evaluate the efficacy of initiated treatments, recognizing when adjustments are needed based on patient response or changing clinical scenarios.
