As part of the College’s international engagement initiatives, we strive to promote work-life balance among the members and trainees. This topic will look at the differences and similarities between the eastern and western practices when it comes to creating the balance. It is highly relevant especially for the trainees and those who are considering a career in surgery. The webinar will pave the way for a better understanding of the topic, leading towards mental health as the ultimate goal, so listen from the UK and Malaysian experts on how they take care of their own wellbeing.
Aims
Due to their hectic schedules, mental health is imperative for trainees and surgeons. The webinar aims to propagate some of the best practices for achieving work-life balance among the audience.
Learning Objectives

Ms. Lenny Suryani Safri
Ms. Lenny Suryani Safri has vast experience in vascular and general surgeries, having started her medical career in 2004 as a House Officer at Hospital Kajang and now heading the Vascular Unit of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, UKM Medical Centre since July 2019. A loving mother of three, she is the first and only female leading the Vascular Unit in UKMMC to date, the only female vascular surgeon in academic setting in Malaysia and as an advocator of vascular health, she is also active in vascular-friendly activities such as hiking and swimming.
Prof. Dato’ Dr Hanafiah Bin Harunarashid
Professor Hanafiah Harunarashid, a UK-trained vascular surgeon with 28 years of working experience in the medical field is currently the Pro Vice Chancellor of the National University of Malaysia (UKM) and a Professor of Surgery. He was awarded fellowships from nine distinguished institutions including Honorary fellowships from the Academy of family Physician Malaysia, Academy of Medicine Philippines and the College of Surgeons Indonesia apart from winning many awards including being the first Malaysian to receive the RCSEd International Medal in 2015.
Ms Katie Hurst - General surgery Registrar in Oxford Deanery, Chair of the Trainees Committee and has undertaken a PhD as an academic trainee between core and higher surgical training.
Mr Stuart Clark - Full time NHS Consultant in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in Central Manchester. He was elected to Council in 2016. He is actively involved in examinations, education, the Regional Advisory Network and International Medical Graduates.
