This focused webinar is part of a monthly series developed in collaboration with the ASGBI and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's General Surgery SSB and Trainee Committee. It is designed to support those preparing for the General Surgery FRCS Exam. The webinar will provide an overview of the fundamental principles of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention and management in general surgical patients. The discussion will explore indications for intervention, the evidence base, and the risks and benefits of VTE prophylaxis and treatment

Aims

Enable trainees to assess and manage VTE risk and the role of preventative strategies and the management of GI venous thrombosis.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand and recognise the key principles of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prevention and management in general surgical patients.
  • Assess the risks of VTE in patients with complex surgical and medical conditions, including those undergoing emergency and elective procedures.
  • Consider the risks and benefits associated with pharmacological and mechanical forms of VTE prophylaxis and the treatment of visceral venous thromboses.
  • Apply knowledge to clinical scenarios involving VTE prevention, diagnosis, and management, including the care of patients with portal vein, splenic vein, and SMV thromboses.
  • Describe the multidisciplinary approach to optimising VTE prevention and treatment in surgical patients.
