Career Workshop: Exploring Pathways to Success as an IMG
There are multiple pathways to success for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in the NHS, each offering unique opportunities for professional growth. Some IMGs choose traditional clinical training routes, while others build their careers through the portfolio pathway. Additionally, the rise of portfolio careers has enabled many to blend clinical practice with non-clinical roles, while some have transitioned entirely into non-clinical fields. This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of career options for IMGs, covering both clinical and non-clinical pathways. Attendees will gain insights into navigating different stages of clinical progression, including training and portfolio routes, as well as exploring opportunities in leadership, education, research, management, and other non-clinical roles. Industry experts and experienced IMGs will share practical advice on identifying opportunities, making informed career decisions, and building a fulfilling professional journey within and beyond clinical practice.
Scaling IMG Participation in Research
Many International Medical Graduates (IMGs) face barriers to engaging in research, often due to a lack of support, mentorship, or prior experience. This can lead to a loss of confidence and missed opportunities for professional growth. However, research is a vital component of clinical development, contributing to innovation, evidence-based practice, and career progression. For the NHS to fully benefit from the diversity of its workforce, it is essential to empower IMGs with the skills and confidence to participate in and lead research. This workshop will feature industry experts who will share practical strategies for getting involved in research, securing mentorship, and overcoming common challenges. Attendees will also gain insights into career pathways in research, funding opportunities, and how research involvement can enhance their clinical careers and impact patient care.
Financial Wellbeing
Workshop: Navigating Finances as an IMG in the UK
International Medical Graduates (IMGs) face unique financial challenges as they establish their careers in the UK. The costs of professional development—such as exams, courses, and training—can be significant. Additionally, many IMGs aspire to own homes, yet may struggle with understanding mortgage options, managing debt, and making informed decisions about the NHS pension scheme. The broader concept of wealth building can also seem complex and elusive. This workshop will feature experts who have successfully navigated these financial challenges themselves or specialize in guiding others through them. Attendees will gain practical insights into effective budgeting, strategic career investments, homeownership, pension planning, and long-term financial security. Whether you are looking to optimize your earnings, minimize financial stress, or build a solid financial future, this session will provide valuable knowledge and actionable strategies.
