The second webinar in a monthly series developed in collaboration with ASGBI and The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh SSB and Trainee Committee. The purpose is to support those preparing for the General Surgery FRCS exam. The focus of this webinar is to provide an overview of the fundamental principles of surgical oncology, the risk factors and diagnostic approaches for malignancy, and the evolving role of immunotherapy in cancer treatment. Additionally demonstrating a multidisciplinary approach in managing complex cancer cases, with a specific focus on rectal cancer.
Aims
Enable trainees to recognise risk factors, investigate and manage gastro-intestinal malignancy and assess response to treatment.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar the participant should be able to
- Define surgical oncology and its role in the multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment
- Explain the basic principles of surgical oncology, including tumor resection and palliative surgery.
- Discuss genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors contributing to cancer development.
- Define the steps involved in the investigation and diagnosis of GI malignancy
- Describe the role of the oncologist and different treatment modalities
- Understand the principles of immunotherapy and it’s current applications
- Describe the multidisciplinary approach to malignancy.
