Next on our series of managing surgical emergencies as a foundation trainee is septic arthritis and osteomyelitis. Learn how to pragmatically and calmly assess and manage patients presenting with these presentations, and what aspects of your history, examination, and investigations are curcuial in management. Leave feeling enlightened and equipped with the tools needed to for you to approach surgical emergencies with confidence and ease.

Summary

This teaching session provides students and medical professionals with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills needed to approach and assess a patient presenting with either septic arthritis or osteomyelitis. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the essential steps in effectively diagnosing and responding to these surgical emergencies, enabling them to manage related emergencies confidently and competently. A framework will be provided and discussed to enable attendees to be able to manage these presentations in a calm, confident, and efficient manner.

Learning objectives

1. Understand how to recognize and assess a joint issue seen in the emergency setting. 2. Begin to develop a broad range of differentials for a swollen/septic joint 3. Grasp the therapeutic implications of each differential diagnosis. 4. Identify risk factors and indicative signs of a septic joint. 5. Begin to develop a framework for investigating the potential causes of a swollen joint. 6. Understand some of the management steps of septic arthritis/ostemyelitis. 7. Understnad some of the complications of septic arthrits/osteomyelitis. 8. Recognise when to call a senior relating to septic arthris/osteomyelitis.
