Welcome to the YFTSS Surgical Emergency Series! These are hour long sessions aimed at calmly walking trainee's through a variety of surgical emergencies they may encounter on their surgical jobs. The aim: to develop a logical approach to some of the scarier presentations encountered in surgery. Along the way we will be joined by seniors of various specialties, who will be chipping in, and also providing more information on their chosen speciality, the day-to-day aspects of their job, and (most importantly) why they love it.
First up: managing an upper GI bleed.
This is a daunting prospect, and it can be easy to panic when faced with this emergency. We provide a simple, pragmatic approach to dealing with this presentation, what is expected of a foundation trainee, and how to approach such a situation calmly and rationally for your future practice.
