Description

Join us for the third session of the Surgery for Finals National Teaching Series! This session will cover key MLA topics related to Colorectal Surgery. At the end, there will be a chance to work through high-yield MLA style SBAs.

Topics to be covered:

Colorectal cancer (screening and surgical procedures)
Bowel obstruction (large + small)

Learning objectives

To form appropriate differential diagnosis of common colorectal conditions.
To be able to identify the clinical features and signs of bowel obstruction, distinguishing between small bowel obstruction (SBO) and large bowel obstruction (LBO).
To understand the diagnostic approaches for bowel obstruction, including the appropriate use of imaging modalities such as X-ray, CT scan, and contrast studies.
To gain an understanding of the surgical and non-surgical treatment options for bowel obstruction, including indications for emergency surgery and postoperative care.
To be aware of colorectal cancer screening, including the role of colonoscopy and faecal occult blood testing
To identify the clinical features of colorectal cancer and understand the staging process, including the use of imaging and biopsy.
To gain knowledge of the various surgical procedures used in the treatment of colorectal cancer and the role of adjuvant therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiation, in the management of colorectal cancer based on staging and surgical outcomes.
To apply understanding of key surgical principles and decision-making processes effectively to solve colorectal UKMLA-style SBAs.
