Description

Join us for the sixth session of the Surgery for Finals National Teaching Series! This session will cover key MLA topics related to Orthopaedic Surgery. At the end, there will be a chance to work through high-yield MLA style SBAs.

Topics to be covered:

  • Hip Fractures (classification + treatment)
  • Wrist fractures
  • Salter-Harris classification
  • Osteomyelitis

Learning objectives

  1. To form appropriate differential diagnosis of common orthopaedic conditions
  2. Classify different types of hip fractures (e.g., intracapsular vs. extracapsular), understand their clinical presentation and apply appropriate treatment options, including surgical and non-surgical management
  3. Recognise and classify common wrist fractures (e.g., Colles' and Smith's fractures), interpret diagnostic imaging, and formulate a management plan based on fracture type
  4. Apply the Salter-Harris classification to paediatric fractures and determine appropriate management strategies for these fractures
  5. Diagnose osteomyelitis based on clinical presentation, laboratory findings and imaging studies, and outline the principles of medical and surgical treatment
  6. To apply understanding of key surgical principles and decision-making processes effectively to solve orthopaedic UKMLA-style SBAs.
