The webinar will cover the diagnosis and management of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), focusing on evidence for best practice. In addition the current challenges in the patient pathway will be explored. This webinar is in partnership with ENTUK.

Aims

  • To understand the diagnosis and differential diagnoses for SSNHL.
  • To review prognostic factors and the role of investigations.
  • Appraise the evidence for different management options.
  • Understand the audiological rehabilitation options for asymmetric loss and single sided deafness.
  • Understand some of the barriers to better care, and areas for research.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, the participant should understand the evidence for the ENT and audiological management of sudden hearing loss, with the aim of optimising the care they provide their patients.

Panellists

Our panellists include:

  • Mr Matthew Smith - Matthew is a clinician scientist at the University of Cambridge, combining clinical practice as a consultant otologist and hearing implant surgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital with an academic interest in clinical trials. He is co-chief investigator for the STARFISH trial, investigating the optimal steroid administration route for treating sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
  • Rachel Knappett (Moderator) - Rachel is the head of adult auditory rehabilitation at Cambridge University Hospitals Audiology department, working clinically with tinnitus patients and complex hearing losses. She is one of the co-investigators on the STARFISH trial and has been supporting Audiologists to deliver speech testing as part of this.
