Description

The incidence of Musculo skeletal injury in the surgical population approaches 27% over a life time. The way we stand a the operating table can be detrimental to our health and compromise the use of our upper limbs and hands. BBASS discusses the functional anatomy of the upper limb and the correct posture.

Summary

This teaching session will provide medical professionals with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively maintain posture during an operation. Participants will learn the importance of optimising the functional anatomy of the upper limb. This lightens the touch and reduces tremor and fatigue. Musculoskeletal health is described as well as exercises to help during the operating day.

Learning objectives

  1. Identify potential risks associated table height in the OR.
  2. List the ergonomic considerations for medical personnel at the operating table.
  3. Describe the functional anatomy of the upper limb.
  4. Outline strategies for standing with correct posture when in the OR.
