Aim
To help health professionals increase their effectiveness in providing brief opportunistic support to patients/ clients in their care who want to stop smoking.
Objectives
By the end of the course participants will have
An awareness of the current prevalence of smoking in Northern Ireland and the U.K. Explored the wide-ranging effects of smoking on the body An informed understanding of the complex nature of tobacco use Explored the reasons why people start to smoke and why they want to stop Examined the stages of change approach by Prochaska and DiClemente and applied it for use in changing smoking behaviour Looked at VBA and Brief Intervention to assess individuals to provide appropriate guidance and support for their stage of stopping smoking An awareness of the current aids to stop smoking, and other nicotine containing products e.g. ecigs Information about further sources of support available Learning content
This training session is intended to create and understanding of stop smoking advice, effective communication with smokers, effective stop smoking medications and local support services.
