1. To understand the anatomy and physiology involved in tracheostomies and the reasons why patients may need a tracheostomy. 2. To identify and manage potential complications arising from tracheostomy, such as infection, bleeding, obstruction or displacement of the tracheostomy tube. 3. To gain skills in simulation-based practice of tracheostomy care including cleaning, suction, tube replacement, cuff inflation and deflation. 4. To learn how to communicate effectively about tracheostomy with the patient, family and the healthcare team, including educating them about its care and potential complications.
