Summary

The first session of this four-part series, delivered by current and previous SFP doctors, will focus on the crucial academic station of the SFP interview. We will be covering the basics of critical appraisal with an emphasis on randomised controlled trials, working through an example abstract, going through an overview of the required knowledge for the station, and how to prepare effectively.

Learning objectives

At the end of the session, participants will be able to: 1. Understand how to critically appraise an abstract 2. Outline the principles of the RCT study design and the research questions they aim to answer 3. Outline the strengths and limitations of the RCT study design 4. Be able to apply these principles to critical appraisal of an RCT
