There are special techniques surgeons use when tying knots after finishing a stitch. The square knot is the most commonly used knot in surgery and comprises at least 3 throws using alternate motions. The drain stitch may be required to anchor a drain positioned inside the body to the external skin surface. This is to prevent the drain from either falling into the body cavity it is draining or falling out of the cavity, for example after an appendicectomy, or for a chest drain for empyema.
