Summary
Scalpel is hosting its 15th Annual Conference with the theme of 'The Evolution of Surgery.' This year, we aim to explore how the surgical field has evolved in respect to both societal, cultural and technological advancements.
Our key note speakers will address:
- The Image of the Modern Surgeon – the good, the bad and the history - hosted by Dr Agnes Arnold-Forster
- Virtual Reality and the Future of Surgery - hosted by Dr Jonathan Fenn in association with VRiMS
- Modernising Surgery – Surgery 4.0 - hosted by Mr Ryan Kerstein
- Surviving in Scrubs explores the Sexual Harassment in Theatres Report and gender issues in healthcare - hosted by Dr Chelcie Jewitt and Dr Becky Cox
Student run projects will be facilitated, as we will have oral presentations in the afternoon, judged by a panel of consultant surgeons. Best talk will receive a prize. Poster submissions is still open - get the opportunity to present a poster at a ratified international conference!
This year we are really excited to offer hands-on, wet laboratory workshops (performed on pig material) run by consultant surgeons, giving unique expertise and experience to medical students:
- Basic surgical skills (calling all Novices!) – learn suturing & knot tying – basic surgical skills
- Abscess drainage! (Swabs required)
- Hands on Virtual Reality in Surgery
- When bowel meets bowel: bowel anastomosis
- Flaps 101: Plastic surgery session
- Small but mighty: Microsurgery
- Trauma in Action: Tracheostomy Insertion
- Fracture? External Fixation! Supported By Stryker
- Useful Urology Skills
The afternoon talks for our online delegates and those between workshops:
- Mr David Rawaf from Inovus presents Where Wires Meet Vessels: Robotics and Digital Surgery
- An Outline and an Experience of Surgical Training by Mr Assad Khan
- Demystifying Academia - a panel of academic surgeon and surgeons in training accepting questions from the audience

Learning objectives
AIMS
- Give medical students insight into the past and present technological and societal advancements of surgery
- Enable access of medical students to wet lab workshops with consultant surgeon tutors at cost-effective rate
- Inspire the next generation of surgeons
OUTCOMES
- To understand of what it takes to train to become surgeon including process of building CV, applying for surgical training
- To understand what potential advancements may occur of the surgical field - VR, AI, surgery 4.0, throughout training and future career as a surgeon
- To understand the current challenges affecting surgery including gender issues
- To learn and develop technical surgical skills using the hands-on workshops
