Description

•This section is probably the most relevant to life as an F1.

•There are 8 questions in this section = 8 different clinical scenarios (a.k.a. question “stems”), with 1 question per scenario. Asked to prescribe one drug/ fluid.

•Each question worth 10 marks

•So this section is worth 80/200 of the marks = one section is worth 40% of the exam!

•Each question has 5 marks available for drug choice, 5 marks for the dose, route and frequency. There are often several correct drug/ dose/ route combinations which will receive full marks.

•Lower marks are given for suboptimal options e.g. 3/5 or 4/5 marks

Summary

Delivered by Dr Ali Ibrahim, Dr Luke Hiorns-Boddington and Dr Sana Shheykhzadeh.

This teaching session, "Prescribing part 2," is geared towards medical professionals, specifically F1s, and focuses on key elements of clinical prescription. It breaks down into 8 detailed clinical scenarios, allowing for effective understanding of drug/fluid prescription. The session offers significant weightage in assessment as it accounts for a whopping 40% of the total exam scores. The scoring allocates equal importance to drug choice and dosage considerations, rewarding multiple correct approaches. Professionals will also gain insights into areas of possible pitfalls as sub-optimal options will receive reduced marks. This session is not only highly relevant but also instrumental in improving medical prescription practices.

Learning objectives

  1. Understand and apply knowledge on how to assess clinical scenarios to determine appropriate drug/fluid prescriptions.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to prescribe the correct dosage, determine the appropriate route, and establish the suitable frequency for various drugs/fluids in different clinical scenarios.
  3. Identify and analyse different drug and dose combinations that could be applied to various clinical situations and appreciate that there can often be more than one correct answer.
  4. Develop strategies to minimize errors in prescription and understand how to avoid suboptimal prescriptions to achieve higher marks.
  5. Understand the significance and weightage of the prescribing section in the overall course grade, aiding in prioritization and effective study planning.
