Welcome back to 'Prescribing in Surgery' series hosted by Mind the Bleep. This week will be focussed on antibiotics including gentamicin and vancomycin. We will also be covering how to manage blood transfusions.

Summary

In our 3rd session of the 'Prescribing in Surgery' series, we delve into practical applications of antibiotics, specifically gentamicin and vancomycin, in surgical care. Additionally, we will also cover optimal management of blood transfusions and prescriptions for specific blood products. Join this session for reflective learning and key insights into improving patient outcomes.

Learning objectives

1. To understand the indications, contraindications, and appropriate usage of antibiotics in a surgical setting. 2. To understand how to prescribe gentamicin and vancomycin, read their charts and adjust doses correctly. 3. To enhance knowledge on the various dosage adjustments needed for patients with different health statuses undergoing surgical procedures. 4. To acquire proficiency in the process of blood transfusion including prescribing the blood, the types of blood products, indications for transfusion, and monitoring during and post-transfusion. 5. To develop skills in managing complications and potential reactions associated with blood transfusions in the surgical setting.
