Summary
This teaching session, "Preparing for a Career in Surgery," is a must-attend virtual event for any medical professional considering a surgical career. It guides attendees through every surgical specialty, enabling learning and knowledge enhancement from specialists. Attendees will have unique access to one-on-one sessions for personalized advice. Furthermore, they can avail themselves of a portfolio clinic to receive feedback and improve their CST portfolio. Additionally, the session provides comprehensive insights into diverse topics like finance and parenthood during surgical training along with alternative and less-than-full-time routes into Surgery. The wide range of surgical subspecialties covered includes everything from Cardiothoracic Surgery to ENT Surgery. The session promises to lay solid groundwork for aspiring surgeons.
Learning objectives
- Familiarize with various surgical specialty options, understanding the unique aspects and requirements of each, including but not limited to OMFS, cardiothoracic, vascular, UGI, HPB, colorectal, transplant, paediatric, and trauma & orthopaedic surgeries.
- Develop understanding of the Core Surgical Training (CST) application process, expectations, and tips on how to enhance their portfolio.
- Tackle the specific challenges and barriers faced by International Medical Graduates (IMGs) and those seeking alternative routes into surgery and understand how to overcome them.
- Analyze the balances and hurdles between surgical training and personal life, such as finance and parenthood, and how to manage them during their surgical journey.
- Gain insight and advice on Less Than Full Time (LTFT) Training, routes into academic surgery, and get personalized career guidance through one-on-one sessions with surgical trainees.
