Take your research to the next level in our Pre-Conference Masterclass Series! The third session, "Poster Development and Presentation: How to Structure and Present to Impress Judges," will empower attendees with the tools to create visually appealing and effective research posters while developing the confidence to present them to an audience.

Led by Chanelle Smith, an award-winning ophthalmology trainee, educator, and science communicator with a wealth of experience in engaging audiences, this session will guide you through the essentials of poster design, communication strategies, and presentation techniques tailored for academic success. Chanelle’s expertise includes impactful research presentations at 12 national and international conferences, a winning project on barriers to diabetic retinopathy screening, and her work on the dermatology textbook Dermatology Cases in Skin of Color, which aims to educate medical professionals about skin conditions in diverse ethnicities.

This interactive session is perfect for students and professionals preparing to showcase their work at the upcoming iNUGSC 2025 conference or anyone aiming to refine their presentation skills.

Summary

Led by award-winning ophthalmology trainee, educator, and equality advocate Chanelle Smith, this session will cover essential skills in poster design, communication strategies, and presentation techniques for academic success. Chanelle has presented research at numerous national and international conferences, winning a national poster prize on barriers to diabetic retinopathy screening. She has developed and e-learning course to enhance diabetic screeners' knowledge in the Diabetic Eye Screening Programme. She also recently judged oral presentations at The Midlands Prospective Ophthalmic Conference.

A passionate advocate for equality and inclusion, she received the Outstanding Pan-Africanism award and will lead the "Breaking Barriers: Addressing Diversity, Ethnicity, and Inequalities in Ophthalmology" session at RCOphth 2025. She is passionate about teaching and mentorship, serving as a Chief Mentor for Medic Mentor, where she coordinated events, mentored scholars, and led a mental health social media campaign. As President of the ELHT Conference Committee, she organised a national hybrid conference on Innovation and Change. Her achievements include ranking in the top 10% of the Duke Elder Undergraduate Prize Examination and winning a National Teaching Award.
