Summary

Burn injuries are one of the most common and devastating types of trauma. Successful management of burn patients requires a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology of burns, advances in burn wound care, surgical techniques, and rehabilitation. Despite the prevalence and significance of burn injuries, there exists a notable gap in the knowledge and clinical practice of many healthcare professionals, including qualified doctors, about optimal burn care.

Learning objectives

Demonstrate the Ability to Assess and Categorize: By the end of this session, participants should be able to competently assess a burn injury's depth and size, categorizing it according to the degree and estimating its total body surface area (TBSA) involvement. Initiate Immediate Interventions: Participants should be proficient in initiating first-line treatment for burns, including pain management, wound care, and preventing further injury, tailored to the severity and type of burn. Formulate a Comprehensive Treatment Plan: Attendees will develop competency in formulating a holistic treatment plan, integrating wound care, potential surgical interventions, rehabilitation, and follow-up sessions for burn patients. Perform Basic Burn Care Procedures: Participants should be able to demonstrate safe and effective techniques for burn wound cleaning, debridement, and dressing, ensuring optimal conditions for wound healing. Coordinate Multidisciplinary Care: By the end of the session, attendees should be adept at identifying when and how to coordinate with other specialties, such as physiotherapy and occupational therapy, to ensure comprehensive burn care and rehabilitation.
