Congenital Heart Disease affects approximately 1 in 100 of all live births. Owing to improved medical interventions, the number of young adults affected by Congenital Heart Disease is expected to increase by 5% every year, with more adults living with Congenital Heart Disease than children.

While many live well with Adult Congenital Heart Disease, the majority of cardiovascular complications occur in adulthood.

Cardiorespiratory fitness is reduced in people with Congenital Heart Disease, with deterioration faster when compared to healthy people. Cardiorespiratory fitness is known to be prognostic of future mortality and morbidity: it is, therefore, important to assess the evidence base on physical activity interventions in this population to inform decision making.
