After the success of the first two seasons, the RCSEd Surgical Specialty Board (SSB) in General Surgery is delighted to partner with the British Hernia Society in our third 'Hernia Masterclass Webinar Series' focussing on the state-of-the-art management of hernias. This series has been carefully designed to take the participants through essential aspects of hernia management covering a wide range of topics. This series will be suitable for general surgeons at all stages of their career. We are particularly keen to encourage surgical trainees in the UK and internationally to attend this series.
Aims
Understanding the physiopathology, classification, and diagnostic and therapeutic strategies of Pfanenstiel Hernia.
An intra-parietal hernia that is characterised by distinct aetiology and features is those that occur after a lower transverse incision, primarily known as the Pfanenstiel incision, which is typical for caesarean section (C-section) and gynaecological procedures. The primary objective of Prof. Hermann Pfannenstiel's 1900 description of the transverse incision for C-section was to enhance cosmesis and minimise hernias.
Therefore, why is the prevalence of hernias following Pfanenstiel incisions (C-sections) so inconsistent? The prevalence is generally reported to be between 0.5% and 5%, and it appears to be increasing in recent years.
What is the reason for our attention to this issue?
A minimum of 20% (29.4 million) of the 140 million births that occur annually will be by caesarean section. This implies that approximately 147,000 hernias will occur annually and may be underdiagnosed or neglected on a global scale.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:
- Understand how to identify and differentiate the 6 types.
- Understand how to best manage these different type.
- Understand how to help to prevent this hernia and change practice.
