Description

Part of our teaching series aimed at 3rd year Newcastle University students but everyone is welcome! All attendees who fill in the feedback form will receive a certificate!

Teaching event focussed on the 3rd year Newcastle University Paediatric Curriculum but all are welcome!

Learning objectives

Learning outcomes covered over 2 sessions (this one and tomorrow's) Develop a differential diagnosis list for a child or young person presenting with abdominal pain, suggest appropriate initial investigations to confirm a diagnosis and give options for a primary management plan Develop a differential diagnosis list for a child or young person presenting with bowel problems such as diarrhoea, rectal bleeding or constipation +/- soiling, suggest appropriate initial investigations to confirm a diagnosis and give options for management Describe the causes of poor weight gain and/or growth in a child or young person, suggest appropriate initial investigations to confirm a diagnosis and give options for management Describe the causes of vomiting in a neonate or infant, suggest appropriate initial investigations to confirm a diagnosis and give options for management Describe the causes of feeding difficulties in a neonate or infant, suggest appropriate initial investigations to confirm a diagnosis and give options for management Describe the obesity epidemic amongst children and the rise in non-communicable disease (NCD), and discuss prevention of NCDs in children Outline normal and healthy feeding and eating behaviour from birth to adulthood Recognise excessive weight gain in a child or young person, identify possible co-morbidities in the child's history and examination, suggest possible investigations and sensitively negotiate a management plan. Develop a differential diagnosis list for a child or young person presenting with vomiting, suggest appropriate initial investigations to confirm a diagnosis and give options for a primary management plan Core conditions: - Obesity - Overfeeding - Psychosocial causes of faltering growth and/or poor weight gain - Feeding problems - Constipation - Coeliac disease - Gastroenteritis - Gastro-oesophageal reflux
