Summary

The initial assessment of a child in the emergency department (ED) sets the trajectory for subsequent medical interventions. Those critical first 5 minutes can determine outcomes, especially in life-threatening situations. Given the unique physiology and presentation of pediatric patients, a targeted approach is paramount. This needs assessment evaluates the practice gap related to the first 5 minutes of pediatric assessment in the ED and highlights areas in need of refinement and focus.
