Description

EUTOS is excited to announce the launch of our new teaching series, "Orthopaedics Around the World" .

For our second talk, we're honoured to have Mr Joe Esland who will be speaking about his experience in performing orthopaedic outreach programs in Malawi.

Mr. Esland is an ST7 in Orthopaedic Surgery on the Edinburgh Rotation, where he is currently appointed as a Travelling Fellow for Project Kuyenda. In this role, he has co-founded a charity that aims to improve the quality of, and access to, orthopaedic services in Northern Malawi, with a focus on frugal innovation, service improvement, and education. In this talk, he will share some of the stories from his work, and the unique challenges and opportunities that present themselves when working in the developing world.

Summary

Join EUTOS's new teaching series, "Orthopaedics Around the World", where our second talk takes us to the country of Malawi. Mr Joe Esland, currently an ST7 in Orthopaedic Surgery on the Edinburgh rotation, will bring us through his unique experiences during his time as a Travelling Fellow for Project Kuyenda, as the challenges he faced when co-founding his very own orthopaedic outreach charity to provide orthopaedic services to Northern Malawi.

Learning objectives

  1. By the end of this session, participants will gain an understanding of how the practice of Orthopaedics in Malawi differs from their own contexts, and identify the unique challenges and opportunities associated with the region.
  2. Participants will illuminate the common types of orthopaedic conditions prevalent in Malawi and how they are treated, as opposed to their own practices.
  3. The medical audience will develop an understanding of the healthcare system in Malawi, specifically how it supports Orthopaedics, and identify the cross-cultural differences that may exist.
  4. Participants will become aware of innovative solutions and procedures adopted by orthopaedic practitioners in Malawi to combat challenges and limitations faced in the region.
  5. By the end of the session, participants will gain a broader understanding of global orthopaedic practice, building their capacity for international collaboration and development within their own practice.
