Summary

The symptom of a "red eye" can be attributed to a myriad of causes, ranging from benign to sight-threatening. The importance of distinguishing between different etiologies cannot be overstated, given the potential implications for a patient's vision and overall ocular health. Physicians play a critical role in the initial evaluation, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with red eye.

Learning objectives

Learning objectives for the teaching session on red eye assessment:

Diagnostic Competence: By the end of this session, participants will be able to proficiently differentiate between various etiologies of red eye through a systematic clinical assessment, giving special attention to distinguishing benign from sight-threatening causes.

Examination Competence: Attendees will develop the ability to ensure accurate and timely identification of red eye etiologies.

Management Competence: Participants will demonstrate the capability to devise and execute appropriate management strategies for red eye conditions, balancing the needs for immediate intervention, conservative management, or specialist referral.

Communication Competence: By the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to effectively counsel patients on red eye etiologies, potential complications, and management plans, ensuring patient understanding and adherence.

Collaboration Competence: Participants will demonstrate the skill to coordinate care effectively, knowing when and how to engage ophthalmology specialists for complex or sight-threatening cases, and ensuring seamless patient transitions between care settings.
