Summary

Hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain, affects individuals of all ages, from infants to adults. Timely diagnosis and appropriate management are pivotal for optimal patient outcomes. However, despite the prevalence of this condition and its potential sequelae, there exists a gap in the comprehensive understanding and management strategies among many practicing physicians.

Learning objectives

Assess and Differentiate: By the end of this session, participants should be competent in conducting thorough clinical evaluations to differentiate between the various types of hydrocephalus and accurately identify the associated signs and symptoms in patients.

Formulate Management Plans: Participants should demonstrate the ability to formulate evidence-based management plans tailored to the specific type of hydrocephalus, taking into account the age, comorbidities, and individual needs of the patient.

Perform Diagnostic Procedures: Attendees will be proficient in selecting and executing appropriate diagnostic procedures for hydrocephalus, ensuring timely and accurate diagnosis, thus preventing potential delays in treatment.

Incorporate Multidisciplinary Care: Learners should exhibit competence in collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, including neurosurgery, rehabilitation, and neuropsychology, to provide holistic care for patients with hydrocephalus.

Evaluate and Adjust: By the conclusion of this teaching session, participants should be competent in monitoring the outcomes of implemented management plans, recognizing potential complications early, and adjusting treatment strategies when necessary to optimize patient outcomes.
