Learning objectives

Aim: The aim of the course is to enable dental nurses to contribute to the over-arching aim of Special Care dentistry to provide delivery of oral care for people with an impairment or disability. Objectives: By the end of the course you will be able to: -Outline the role of an effective Special Care dental nurse and how to work within a multi-disciplinary team -Demonstrate awareness of social and ethical issues affecting those with an impairment or disability -Highlight common causes of impairment, disability, medically compromising conditions and mental health impairments -Empathise with patients and demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively with patients, parents, carers and colleagues -Outline the various settings for Special Care dentistry -Indicate barriers to oral health care and how to improve access to oral health -Assist those with impairments and disability when receiving oral health care -Carry out risk assessments and appropriately manually handle patients -Manage a medical emergency within a surgery -Access and use appropriately current information and guidelines from relevant bodies to support the patient during Special Care dentistry
