Session 1: Coronary Artery Disease & Valvulopathies🫀🫀🫀

Join this joint St George's Surgical Society, St George's Cardiothoracic Society, and St George's Cardiology Society session for an in-depth discussion on the pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnosis, and management of coronary artery disease, as well as an overview of common valvular heart diseases, their clinical presentation, and indications for surgical intervention.🫀🫀🫀

Mr Vinci Naruka graduated from the University of Cambridge and attained the extremely competitive run-through National Training Number in Cardiothoracic Surgery in London, on his first attempt straight after FY2. He is currently an ST6 Cardiothoracic Surgery Registrar at St. George’s Hospital. He holds the position in the Education Committee for the European Association for Cardio-thoracic surgery (EACTS) where he hopes to widen education in Cardiothoracic Surgery across the Continent. He has also founded the Pre-Trainee committee as part of EACTS with the aim to introduce the specialty earlier to medical students and pre-training doctors. He is part of the EACTS Mentoring Committee. He is also the Trainee Representative for Cardiothoracic Surgery in London. Mr Naruka has led a multi-centre collaborative projects and has an array of publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals and several international presentations. He is heavily involved in national education and mentoring medical students and junior doctors towards a career in surgery. ​ ​

Learning objectives

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD):

  1. Understand normal coronary anatomy and the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to CAD, including atherosclerosis and plaque formation.
  2. Identify modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for CAD
  3. Recognize symptoms ranging from stable angina to acute coronary syndromes, including myocardial infarction.​
  4. Interpret diagnostic tests, including ECGs
  5. Understand management encompassing lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy (e.g., antiplatelet agents, statins, beta-blockers), and interventional procedures like percutaneous coronary intervention and coronary artery bypass grafting.

Valvular Heart Diseases:

  1. Describe causes and mechanisms of common valvular diseases, including stenosis and regurgitation of the aortic and mitral valves.​
  2. Identify signs and symptoms of valvular dysfunction, such as murmurs, heart failure, and embolic events.​
  3. Understand medical management and the indications for surgical intervention
