Knot tying is a skill that is required by all surgeons. It is also the most difficult skill to learn especially with both hands. Knots have to be secure and need to be tied in such a way that it cannot be pulled off and does not fray the thread. BBASS deconstruct the elements of knot tying and offers simple models for practice. We also describe the properties of sutures and explain how many throws are needed for each type of suture. We do not teach speed; we teach economy of time and movement i.e. the hands working in harmony.
