Description

Professor Peter Hutchinson is a distinguished figure in the field of neurosurgery, renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to the understanding and treatment of neurotrauma. Holding a prominent position as Professor of Neurosurgery and NIHR Research Professor at the University of Cambridge, he serves as the Head of the Division of Academic Neurosurgery within the Department of Clinical Neurosciences.

With a comprehensive academic background including a BSc (Hons), MBBS, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge, Professor Hutchinson is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Surg Neurol) and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (FMedSci). His clinical expertise is evident in his role as an Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where he specializes in the intricate management of neuro-trauma, particularly focusing on head and traumatic brain injuries.

Professor Hutchinson's research endeavors have significantly advanced the field of acute brain injury. His work involves the innovative use of multimodality monitoring technology, which encompasses the measurement of pressure, oxygenation, and chemistry to enhance our understanding of the pathophysiology of brain injury. His investigations extend to the comprehensive study and treatment of concussion, and he leads the international RESCUE studies, evaluating the role of decompressive craniectomy in traumatic brain injury.

Recognized for his outstanding contributions, Professor Hutchinson was honored with the Olivecrona Prize, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize for Neurosurgery," acknowledging his exceptional work on cerebral metabolism in acute brain injury. His prolific research output includes over 400 publications, with contributions to prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, and Brain. Additionally, he has been the lead applicant in research grants exceeding £10 million, encompassing funding from organizations such as the MRC and NIHR.

Beyond his academic and clinical roles, Professor Hutchinson holds leadership positions in various professional organizations. He is the President of the Clinical Neurosciences Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, the Royal College of Surgeons Neurosurgical Specialty lead for clinical trials, Chair of the Academic Committee of the Society of British Neurological Surgeons, Secretary of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies, Treasurer of the International Neurotrauma Society, Neurosurgical Representative on the NICE head guidelines development group, and Chief Medical Officer for the Formula One British Grand Prix.

Join us as Professor Peter Hutchinson shares his expertise, providing insights into the latest advancements in neurotrauma surgery and the ongoing efforts to enhance our understanding and treatment of critical brain injuries.
