Join us for an enlightening event led by Professor Keyoumars Ashkan, a distinguished figure in the field of neurosurgery and a trailblazer in the development of novel therapies for glioma.
With a rich background in neurosurgery, Professor Ashkan brings a wealth of expertise to the table. As the Professor of Neurosurgery at King’s College Hospital, his specialist interests span functional neurosurgery, image-guided surgery, and interventions for brain and spinal tumors. Notably, he serves as the lead for neuro-oncology and heads the neuroscience commercial clinical trial unit at King’s College Hospital.
Professor Ashkan's journey in medicine began with training at the University of Wales College of Medicine, followed by comprehensive postgraduate training in both medicine and surgery. His path led him through a rigorous general neurosurgical training program within the South Thames Specialist Registrar rotation, where he honed his skills in leading units such as King’s College, Atkinson Morley’s, and The National Hospitals. Further enriching his expertise, he pursued a fellowship in France under the tutelage of Professor Benabid, a pioneer in modern functional neurosurgery.
Before assuming his consultant role at King’s College Hospital, Professor Ashkan held positions as a Senior Lecturer in Functional Neurosurgery and Honorary Consultant Neurosurgeon at the Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
In addition to his clinical commitments, Professor Ashkan is deeply committed to advancing research initiatives, particularly in the realm of brain tumor and Parkinson’s disease treatments. He actively contributes to the neurosciences Research Advisory Group at King’s College Hospital and boasts a prolific publication record with over 400 peer-reviewed papers, abstracts, and book chapters.
Professor Ashkan's influence extends beyond academia; he holds significant leadership roles, including President of the British Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery and Chairman of the Surgical Group of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. He also spearheads the Genomics England program for brain tumors.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Ashkan was honored as Clinician of The Year by the Brain Tumour Charity in 2018.
