Edinburgh University Trauma & Orthopaedic Society (EUTOS) 2024 virtual conference in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen Orthopaedic & Rheumatology Society (THOR) 2024.

"Breaking Barriers, Not Bones: Inclusivity in Orthopaedics” is a virtual conference focused on fostering inclusivity in the field of orthopaedics.

Summary

Join us for the 2024 Edinburgh University Trauma & Orthopaedic Society (EUTOS) Virtual Conference, hosted in collaboration with the University of Aberdeen Orthopaedic & Rheumatology Society! This year’s conference will center on Diversity and Inclusivity in Orthopaedics, creating a platform for open discussion and learning about the unique experiences of underrepresented groups within the field.

Our lineup features expert speakers from diverse minority backgrounds who will share their personal and professional journeys, highlighting the challenges they faced and the resilience needed to overcome them. Gain insights into how the orthopaedic community can become more inclusive and supportive, from recruitment practices to creating a workplace culture that embraces all backgrounds.

There will be the opportunity to ask each of our speakers questions after each of their talks. Details of the speakers will be released soon, so keep an eye out on our socials!

Whether you’re a student, trainee, or professional, this conference promises valuable perspectives and practical strategies for building a more welcoming orthopaedic environment. Join us to be part of this important conversation and contribute to shaping a more inclusive future in healthcare!

  4. Ms Adeline Clement: ‘Tibial Pursuits: What I have learnt in my surgical journey’ (10:55-11:20)
  5. Mr Sam Singh: ‘Journey in NHS as an International Medical Graduate’ (11:25-11:50)
  6. Ms Kezia Brown: “An orthopaedic consultant’s journey from Mr to Ms” (11:55-12:40)
  7. Questions/Closing remarks (12:40-1:00)

Learning objectives

  1. At the end of the session, the participants should be able to understand and discuss the challenges and barriers to inclusivity in the field of orthopaedics.

  2. By the end of the course, participants will be able to identify key strategies and actions to promote a culture of inclusivity in their own orthopaedic practice or education environment.

  3. The attendees will be able to recognise the importance of cultural competency in orthopaedic care to ensure effective treatment for diverse patient populations.

  4. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to be advocates for diversity and inclusion in orthopaedics, in both their individual roles and at the organisational level, possibly spearheading new initiatives for more diverse representation.

  5. Participants will have the opportunity to ask speakers questions after their respective talks.

  6. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the event.
