Overview

This Faculty of Surgical Trainers webinar is to discuss the recent work done by the surgical societies, royal colleges, and independent groups into the area of equity, diversity and inclusion; including sexual harassment.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this webinar, attendees should be able to:

  • Understand the difference between bullying, undermining and harassment
  • Understand the magnitude of the issues within surgery
  • Learn about available learning resources and support
  • Reflect upon your own practice and behaviours

Our panellists include:

Ms Alice Hartley

Alice is a Consultant Urologist with a special interest in renal and advanced prostate cancer. She has been chair of the RCSEd campaign to tackle undermining and bullying since its conception and along with the campaign team has recently developed a course to teach people skills to challenge conflict in the workplace.

Miss Kathrin Whitehouse

Consultant neurosurgeon in University Hospital Wales, council member for Society of British Neurological Surgeons and member of SBNS Working Group for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Professor Carrie Newlands

Consultant OMFS Surgeon in Guildford, co-lead of the Working Party on Sexual Misconduct in Surgery, and senior author of the recently-published “Sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape by colleagues in the surgical workforce, and how women and men are living different realities: observational study using NHS population-derived weights".

Pragnesh Bhatt (Chair)

Summary

This live teaching session focuses on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in UK Surgery. Medical professionals will learn about the influence culture and identity can have on medical practice and its impact on the patient experience. This interactive session will cover leading inclusivity and the importance of promoting diversity in medical settings. Drawing from real-life experiences, the session will provide an opportunity to critically reflect on and consider strategies to ensure a culture of fairness in all surgical settings.
