Dr Chris Gardner

Dr Chris Gardner is Deputy Medical Director has been a Consultant Paediatrician at East Lancashire Hospital's NHS Trust since 2011. Dr Gardner trained in the North West, completing training in the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and completing research in the Endocrinology Unit at University Hospital Aintree.

In addition to his clinical duties, he is also Clinical Director for general paediatrics and used to be chair of the North West Children and Young People’s Diabetes Network.

Ms Denize Atan

Ms Denize Atan qualified from the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford in Clinical Medicine and Surgery in 1996. She undertook higher specialist training in ophthalmology alongside her PhD research in ocular genetics at the University of Bristol from 2004. She later spent 2 years as postdoctoral research fellow in neurogenetics at the University of Toronto and Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto funded by the Wellcome Trust.

Ms Atan currently divides her time between working as a Consultant Senior Clinical Lecturer in Neuro-ophthalmology at Bristol University and as an Honorary Consultant in Neuro-ophthalmology at the Bristol Eye Hospital. Her surgical expertise is in strabismus surgery. She also specialises in retinopathy of prematurity.

She is a member of the Bristol Neuro-Oncology Group (BNOG) and the multidisciplinary team that provides a regional service in the South West of England for patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2).

In parallel with my clinical commitments, she leads an active research group at the University of Bristol with common interests in neurodevelopment, neurogenetics and neuro-inflammatory disease.

She is also Unit Lead for Neuroscience for the BSc in Health Sciences course at the University of Bristol and is on the Faculty for undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses in Stem Cell Biology, Regenerative Medicine and Molecular Neuroscience at the University of Bristol.

In 2015, Denize was appointed the Lead for Women in Science in the School of Clinical Sciences, becoming a high-profile role model for women in the School and an active promoter of equality and diversity.

Mr Andrew Alalade

Mr Andrew Alalade is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Royal Preston Hospital, Lancashire. He is a honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and is the Regional Director of the NorthWest England Neurosurgery Teaching Programme. He completed his undergraduate medical training at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. His neurosurgical residency training was done in the London North Thames rotation.

Following the completion of his chief residency stint at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London in 2016; he gained additional training as the BASO/HCA International Foundation Traveling Fellow at the Weill Cornell Medical College – New York Presbyterian Hospital, USA before doing advanced subspecialty fellowships at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane and the Walton Centre, Liverpool.

Mr Alalade has an active interest in research, and has published several papers and book chapters relating to skull base neurosurgery, cerebrovascular neurosurgery, and minimally invasive approaches.
