  • Describe the muscles of the middle ear [SBA]
  • Describe the structure and function of the vestibular system [SBA]
  • Describe the features of a normal tympanic membrane [SBA]
  • Describe the functions of the external and middle ears [SBA]
  • Describe the role of the inner ear in sound transduction [SBA]
  • Describe the auditory pathway and its main functions in the analysis and localisation of sound [SBA]
  • Describe the mechanisms for encoding sound frequency [SBA]

Summary

Join the Newcastle Anatomy and Physiology Society for our upcoming teaching session focused on Ear Anatomy. Taking place on Thursday 27th March from 6-7pm, delve into the deep and complex structures of the ear, from the intricate web of the external to the mechanisms of the middle and inner ear. Gain a deeper understanding of the muscles of the middle ear, the role of the vestibular system in maintaining balance, and the key functions of the auditory pathway in the analysis and localisation of sound. This comprehensive overview will significantly benefit medical professionals aiming to enhance their anatomical knowledge and patient care skills. Zoom link will be provided closer to the date. Your auditory journey awaits!

Learning objectives

  1. The learners will be able to accurately describe the anatomy of the external ear, middle ear, and inner ear, including their individual structures and functions.

  2. The learners will gain the ability to elaborate on the various muscles of the middle ear, detailing their unique roles and implications on ear function.

  3. The learners will develop knowledge on the structure and role of the vestibular system, gaining understanding on how it contributes to balance and spatial orientation.

  4. The learners will understand the features of a healthy tympanic membrane, enabling them to compare it against abnormalities in a clinical setting.

  5. The learners will acquire a comprehensive understanding of the roles and functions of the external, middle, and inner ear in sound transduction, including the auditory pathways and the mechanisms for encoding sound frequency.
