In this webinar, the aetiology, symptoms and management of Functional Neurological Disorders (FND) will be discussed in relation to the implications on oral health and dental management,

Aims

  • To update knowledge of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
  • To increase confidence amongst dental care professionals in managing patients with FND who require dental care.

Learning Objectives

  • To discuss the presentation of Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), to recognise the impact of symptoms on daily life and current management techniques
  • To understand the oral implications of FND and barriers experienced by patients when accessing dental care
  • To learn from lived patient experience how reasonable adjustments can be made to improve access
  • To consider the impact of local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia in relation to FND.

Panellists

Our panellists include:

  • Ms Rebecca Iles, Consultant in Special Care Dentistry.
  • Rebecca is a Consultant at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. She graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2014, and after working in OMFS, restorative and community dentistry, undertook an MSc in Special Care Dentistry (SCD) alongside Specialist training which she completed in 2021. She is on the executive committee for the British Society of SCD, the RCSEd SCD Advisory Board, Chair of The Sedation Network Meeting, and RCSEd examiner and involved in teaching at Peninsula School of Dentistry
  • Dr Beth Mallam, Consultant Neurologist
  • Beth has been a Neurology Consultant at Southmead Hospital in Bristol since 2017. She was the first neurologist in the UK to be directly appointed to a functional neurological disorder post. The Rosa Burden Centre has one of the most comprehensive FND multi-disciplinary therapy teams outside London. The team provide both outpatient and inpatient therapy options. In 2023, they recruited the first FND Liaison Practitioner. This role has been replicated by other centres across the UK. Beth sits on medical advisory committees for two of the main FND peer support groups: FND Hope and FND Action. She is an ambassador for the Southwest based peer support group: FND Friends. She is a founding member of the International FND Society and a committee member of the Association of British Neurologists’ Special Interest Group for FND.
  • Gabrielle Falquero
  • Gabi was diagnosed with FND in August 2021 after the onset of life altering symptoms in July 2021. She graduated from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2014 and gained her MFDS qualification during her foundation training year. After a year of OMFS, restorative and community dentistry, she worked in the community dental services and was studying for a Diploma in Special Care Dentistry with the RCS before her diagnosis. She officially had to leave Dentistry in July 2022 and now works part time as a Learning Support Practitioner at a Music College for young people with special education needs.
