Description

Students often find critical appraisal and reading academic paper a challenging task. Some boil the process down to PICO, which is an important tool, but it doesn't represent the entire story.

That's why the Demystify team found you an expert in this area. He will talk about how to critically evaluate a research paper and how to interpret all those confusing terminology (ie confidence intervals, bias etc). This seminar will succinctly address what interviewees need to know to answer those questions posed by the interview panel. Showcase your understanding in academic medicine and shine in the process!

Mr O’Hara is a Consultant ENT surgeon with a specialist interest in the management of benign and malignant conditions affecting the throat, voice box, neck and salivary glands at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital.

Mr O’Hara recently completed an MD thesis in conjunction with a large clinical trial assessing how to manage troublesome persistent throat and voice symptoms – demonstrating that the commonest treatment used for these symptoms (proton pump inhibitors, eg Lansoprazole) are ineffective.

He works with Newcastle University to deliver large trials assessing the effectiveness of tonsillectomy in adults and nasal septal surgery and is a council member on the Royal Society of Medicine, British Association of Head and Neck Oncologists, as well as head and neck cancer lead for the Northern Cancer Alliance.

Summary

This interactive seminar will provide medical professionals with an in-depth look into critical appraisal and reading academic papers. Presented by Mr O'Hara, a Consultant ENT surgeon and council member of several Royal Societies, attendees will learn how to interpret confusing terminology and use this to critically evaluate a research paper. This session is perfect for anyone looking to showcase their understanding in academic medicine and excel in the process!
