Description

Introduction:

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an advanced x-ray technique which generates a 3D volumetric data set of the dentoalveolar region from a series of several hundred 2D projection images.

CBCT has grown exponentially since it was first introduced in the 1990s. It has applications in nearly all aspects of dentistry including endodontics, oral surgery and orthodontics and has been described as the gold standard for imaging of the oral and maxillofacial region.

The European Academy for Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology outline two levels of further education for CBCT. Level 1 (core) training to be undertaken by those prescribing/referring for CBCT examinations and level 2 (advanced) training by those reporting on CBCT.

NIMDTA are delighted to present a Level 1 Dentoalveolar CBCT Course. This course is provided in conjunction with the British Society of Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology (BSDMFR).

The course will be delivered by consultants in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, with extensive knowledge and experience of CBCT. These educators will cover all aspects of clinical application of CBCT for dentistry.

The course curriculum adheres to learning outcomes established by EADMFR guidance and PHE/FGDP.

Level 1 (core) CBCT training is a mandatory requirement for all personnel involved with dental CBCT (dentists, dental nurses with a Certificate in Dental Radiography, dental hygienists and therapists).

Participants must have completed 5 hours of verifiable CPD in Radiography and Radiation Protection, in the last 5 years, prior to commencement of this course.

Once you have completed level 1 you will be eligible to complete level 2, if appropriate, which NIMDTA will be delivering in June 2025.

NIMDTA are offering Face to Face training

Summary

Level 1:

This intensive 6-hour course provides a comprehensive overview of Cone Beam Computed Tomography principles, regulations and application. Level 1 CBCT training will expand your skillset to facilitate referral for CBCT imaging and provide the knowledge required to identify field anatomy, recognise artefacts and assess image quality. Don't miss this opportunity to stay on the forefront of healthcare technology. Suitable for dental professionals seeking to advance their knowledge in this cutting-edge technique.

Learning objectives

Aims This course is based on the Level 1 training criteria published in the latest UK guidelines (Guidance Notes for Dental Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-ray Equipment, 2nd ed., 2020) and is designed for UK dentists who have already attended an IRMER course. This course provides training on the legal and ethical responsibilities of a dentist who refers a patient for a CBCT scan.

Learning Outcomes At the end of the course, participants should be able to:  Describe what CBCT scans are and their role in diagnosis and treatment planning.  Explain the basic scientific principles and limitations of CBCT imaging.  Explain the radiation doses and risks of CBCT.  Describe how to minimize radiation risks to the patient (optimization).  Discuss the responsibilities of a CBCT referrer with regard to clinical justification.  Discuss the differences between conventional dental (2D) and CBCT (3D) imaging.  Explain which clinical conditions would benefit from CBCT imaging (selection criteria).  Recognise normal anatomy of the teeth and supporting structures.  Recognise the more common imaging artefacts.  Explain who should provide a radiological report.  Discuss the contents of a radiologist’s report, and its influence on patient treatment.  Explain why guidelines are important, and have an understanding of a dentist’s legal and ethical responsibilities in their various roles of being Referrer, Practitioner and Operator.

GDC Development Outcomes This course meets the criteria for the General Dental Council’s enhanced CPD development outcomes B, C and D.

The course contents are subject to quality assurance by the British Society of Dental Maxillofacial Radiology.
