Course Convenors: Dr Shiv Kolhe, Miss Khadija Mahmoud
Contacts: student@bota.org.uk, shivam.kolhe2@nhs.net
Target audience: Medical Students +/- early FY1 doctors
Course Format:
This national pre-conference course has been designed in collaboration with BOMSA to teach basic orthopaedic practical skills and core knowledge to those interested in a career in orthopaedics. We will be delivering a dynamic, hands-on day with a morning of short career-focused talks, portfolio workshops and teaching focusing on x-ray interpretation and basic fracture management. The afternoon will allow delegates the opportunity to get comfortable with orthopaedic practical skills using dry sawbone and bone cementing kits in a low-stress environment under close supervision from course faculty, including orthopaedic trainees and consultants. There will also be an opportunity to hone your suturing skills and so when you get into theatre your knowledge and skills can shine!
Attending this course is also an excellent way to demonstrate commitment to the speciality for both CST and ST3 applications.

There is NO requirement for medical students to attend the main BOTA congress as well. However, this is an amazing opportunity to learn first-hand what trainees are exposed to day-to-day with unrivalled networking opportunities with trainees and consultants across the UK. This is particularly useful should you wish to apply for any national management and leadership roles within orthopaedics in the future, demonstrating a real commitment to the speciality and setting you apart from your peers. If you are interested and wish to make the most of this opportunity and get the most out of this year's BOTA congress, sign up as a Medical Student Volunteer here: https://forms.gle/sP5uuM8FydVKQEzq5
NB: If you have recently applied for membership and it is pending review/confirmation, you are still eligible to book a place on our course and/or congress. We will be verifying active membership status upon attendance.
If you have any questions about the course and/or congress, please contact Shiv Kolhe - BOMSA President (contact@bomsa.org.uk) or Khadija Mahmoud - BOTA Med Student Rep (student@bota.org.uk)
