Description

Building upon the success of our first research seminar, the Brunei Medical Students Association (BMSA) is excited to propose the second part of our research series. This online seminar aims to equip our members with essential skills and knowledge required for crafting high-quality research papers, conducting thorough literature reviews, critically appraising academic papers, and navigating the process of paper publication. We are honored to invite a distinguished Professor of Surgery, renowned for their extensive research experience, to lead this informative and interactive session.

Summary

Join us for our second research session, where we’ll be covering how to format a research paper from an editor’s point of view! Our speaker is Professor Kenneth Kok, Professor of Clinical Academia and Dean of PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences, UBD, and Consultant General Surgeon in Jerudong Park Medical Centre, Brunei Darussalam. Having published over 100 scientific papers with a h-index of 30, he was the Editor-in-Chief of Brunei International Medical Journal from 2002 to 2010; he is currently member of Editorial Board for Asian Journal of Endoscopic Surgery and Global Journal of Breast Cancer Research, while also being a reviewer for 20 Scopus-indexed scientific journals. Professor Kenneth is highly experienced in the publication process. Through this talk we hope to help medical students approach academic writing in a structured manner, and also help to students and young trainees to understand what editors of journals are looking for in research articles!

Learning objectives

By the end of Part 2 of the seminar, participants should be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental components and structure of a research paper. 2. Apply techniques for conducting a thorough and well-organized literature review. 3. Critically appraise academic papers, identifying key points and evaluating methodology, results, and conclusions. 4.
