This Applying for Surgical Training webinar series aims to guide attendees through the application process for the surgical training. This webinar will be focused on a very significant part of the CST application – audits and quality improvement projects. We will be discussing how to lead a meaningful audit and how to use this opportunity to gain maximum points in the CST application.

Aims

This webinar series aims to introduce attendees to the components of the surgical training application and how applicants can achieve the points allocated for each.

Learning Objectives

• To introduce attendees to the stages of planning an audit or QI project.
• To inform attendees about the cycle of an audit and how to complete different stages of the cycle
• To inform attendees how the process of leading an audit can be used in CST applications

Panellists

Our panellists include:

• Dr Sivesh Kamarajah - Sivesh is an academic surgical trainee. He is undertaking a PhD, funded by a NIHR Doctoral Fellowship at University of Birmingham. He has experience in designing and leading on international cohort studies (CASCADE, GECKO) and senior lead for STARSurg.
• Ms Aya Riad - Aya is a final year medical student at the University of Edinburgh and an incoming Academic Foundation Doctor at Imperial College London, focusing on Surgery & Innovation. She is an affiliate member of the RCSEd Trainees Committee, Student Lead of the STARSurg Research Collaborative and President of Academic Training in Undergraduate Medicine (ATRIUM) Edinburgh. She was the Convenor of the Medical Students Council and President of Edinburgh Student Surgical Society. Aya has a keen interest in academic surgery, particularly global and cancer surgery, and is passionate about increasing diversity in surgery and academia and the importance of mentorship, having founded the Edinburgh Surgical Mentorship Programme.
