Summary

This high-yield teaching session on "Antibiotics and Sepsis" is presented by Teaching Things. The tutorial will help medical professionals understand the indications of antibiotics and early detection of sepsis - a life-threatening condition. The session will be led by advanced medical students who are focused on delivering practical and exam-focused content. Attendees are encouraged to provide valuable feedback after the session. Recordings of past tutorials are also available for revision purposes.

This teaching will cover the important concepts regarding Antibiotics and Sepsis. This will include understanding the classes of antibiotics, the bacterias they specifically target, some common conditions in which they are prescribed, and some important side-effects to remember. We will cover how, in a GP setting, we decide how and when to give antibiotics. Finally, we will cover the importance of sepsis, how to identify and investigate it, and how to manage it in an acute setting.

Learning objectives

  1. Understand what antibiotics are, how they are classified, and which bacteria they target.
  2. Understand what antibiotics you would consider depending on the type of bacteria that is causing the infection, and some common conditions to be aware of.
  3. Understand how GPs may determine when antibiotics should be prescribed/
  4. Understand the importance of sepsis as a life-threatening emergency.
  5. Understand how to identify sepsis, and how to investigate and manage sepsis in an acute emergency.
  6. Understand some common complications of sepsis
