Description

Oncological emergencies, whether directly resulting from the malignancy or secondary to the therapeutic interventions, pose a significant challenge to physicians across specialties. These emergencies can manifest across a range of clinical spectrums, from metabolic disorders like tumor lysis syndrome to structural issues such as spinal cord compression. Given the potential for rapid clinical deterioration and significant morbidity or mortality, timely and effective management is imperative.

Learning objectives

Learning objectives for the teaching session on the management of oncological emergencies: Rapid Identification & Response: By the end of this session, participants will be able to swiftly recognize the clinical manifestations of common oncological emergencies and initiate immediate, appropriate interventions. Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Upon completion of this teaching session, attendees will demonstrate an enhanced ability to coordinate and communicate seamlessly with a multidisciplinary team, ensuring that patients receive comprehensive care during oncological emergencies. Patient Stabilization & Monitoring: After attending this session, participants will be competent in stabilizing patients experiencing oncological emergencies, and will understand the key parameters to monitor, ensuring timely escalation or de-escalation of care as needed. Effective Patient and Caregiver Education: By the end of this session, attendees will be adept at educating patients and caregivers about the signs and symptoms of oncological emergencies, empowering them to seek timely medical attention when required. Ethical Decision-Making: Upon the conclusion of the session, participants will be equipped to navigate the complex ethical considerations inherent to aggressive interventions in oncological emergencies, particularly in cases with a terminal prognosis.
