Understanding the Basics: At the end of this session, participants should have a firm grasp of the basic concepts and definitions associated with acute abdomen assessment, including the understanding of what constitutes an acute abdomen and the common causes.
Approach to Assessment: Participants should understand the step by step approach for accurately assessing a patient with an acute abdomen after this session. This includes understanding the importance of taking an appropriate patient history, carrying out a comprehensive physical examination, and deciding on requisite diagnostic tests.
Knowledge of Symptoms and Signs: Participants will be conversant with the wide range of symptoms and presentation of acute abdomen issues. They should also be able to align these symptoms with potential diagnoses.
Diagnosis and Treatment Options: By the end of this session, participants should gain understanding on the different differential diagnoses for acute abdomen and the treatment plan for each of these conditions including medical management, surgical indications, and follow-up care.
Practical Application: The session will end with case-study analyses whereby through active participation, participants will be expected to apply the knowledge they've gained to diagnose and propose management plans for hypothetical patients with varying acute abdomen presentations.
