Summary

"Guide to Specialty Applications in Women's Health: Session 3" is a lecture designed for medical students and resident doctors considering a future in women's health. Hosted by Dr. Natasha Citeroni-Clarke, an O&G Specialty Trainee, and Dr. Anna Harvey Bleumel, a Specialty Academic Clinical Fellow Trainee. The session will provide insights into the application process for specialties, offer advice on portfolio building and interview preparation, and guidance on navigating the Oriel system. Natasha is a ST2 O&G Trainee in the KSS deanery, currently working at Frimley Park Hospital. Natasha undertook academic foundation training in Southampton, including research work in Obstetrics. Her interests currently include maternal-fetal medicine, benign gynaecology and medical education.

Anna is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and ST2 in O&G based in the North East. Her research focus is in clinical education and she has published on a range of topics including widening access to medicine, academic careers and the impact of Covid-19 on medical education. Alongside this she is a member of the committees of the Trainees in the Association for the Study of Medical Education and Developing Medical Educators Group. Outside of medicine she enjoys reading, going to gigs and hanging out with her whippet puppy, Twiglet.

Learning objectives

  1. Understand the current application process for specialties in women's health: By the end of the session, learners should be able to detail the process of applying for a specialty position in women's health and the steps involved in the application, including selection and offers.

  2. Develop strategies to build an effective portfolio: Learners should be able to identify key elements to include in their portfolio that demonstrate their skills and experience, and how to best present this information to improve their chances of success in the application process.

  3. Prepare for interviews: Participants will learn strategies to effectively prepare for an interview, including understanding the format of interviews, typical questions asked, and how to communicate their experience and skills effectively.

  4. Navigate the Oriel application system: Participants should be able to confidently navigate the Oriel system, understanding how to complete their application and upload necessary evidence, as well as how to track the progress of their application.

  5. Gain insight into the specifics of the specialty: At the end of the session, learners should have a deeper insight into the field of women's health, including what can be expected in terms of workload, responsibilities, and opportunities for growth and development in this specialty.
