In the UK, despite women comprising 59% of medical students, only 16% advance to consultant surgeon roles. This stark disparity highlights the urgent need for change. WinSSA (Women in Surgery Student Association) aims to establish dedicated Women in Surgery teams across all UK medical schools, starting with a small committee that will work closely with surgical societies to identify and overcome barriers. This initiative is especially timely, as recent reports reveal the challenges women face in surgery, including significant issues like sexual harassment in the workplace and pressures to sacrifice family responsibilities. WinSSA will support these teams with regular guidance on securing sponsorships, organising events, and creating mentorship programs. Additionally, we’ll launch a nationwide mentorship program and an open-access newsletter to celebrate the achievements of women in surgery. Our goal is to empower and inspire female medical students to pursue and thrive in surgical careers, addressing the neglected gender disparities in the field.
