Welcome to Mindfulness: Neuroscience and Application. This module combines experiential and a scientific understanding of mindfulness in a mutually informative way. The first five weeks of the module blend the conceptual material with a guided meditation to support the understanding of mindfulness as a state and as a process. Week 1 explores the conceptual issues surrounding the definition of mindfulness and different approaches to mindfulness practice to encourage flexible and critical thinking about mindfulness research. The effects of mindfulness on the body’s physiology, on brain structure and function, and on emotional regulation are presented in weeks 2-4. The experiential and neuroscientific understanding of mindfulness that are built in the first 4 weeks serve as the bridge to understanding the efficacy of mindfulness as a psychotherapeutic intervention (week 5), as well as its broader applications for performance enhancement in the workplace, in education, and in sports (week 6).
