Asian Cancer Support Group is a voluntary not-for-profit organisation founded by Dr Anil Jain in 2011 to provide a platform for clinicians, researchers, students and patients to share knowledge and experiences of cancer diagnoses, cancer research and cancer survivors.
We have a wide ranging objectives including improving cancer patient communication, information sharing & support, #BreastCancerAwareness & promoting research and innovation in cancer care. Initially our focus was Breast Cancer but since 2018 we are supporting other cancers as well .
Our membership includes, Doctors, Nurses, Radiographers, Onco-pharmacists, other Allied Health Care Professionals, Patients, Carers, Lay people, Healthcare Leaders & Managers, Cancer Care Allies, Innovators and Researchers in Cancer Care.
The Asian Cancer Support Group thrives on active partnership between health professionals and Asian cancer patients, their carers and interested lay public members.
The cancer incidence rates have increased in the Asians in the UK, the Indian subcontinent & globally and hence our main aims and objectives are:
1. Support: Asian cancer patients have unique cultural and linguistic needs. The Group provides a valuable forum for patient and carer group members to interact and share their experiences with each other. The Group is providing this support to newly diagnosed
patients as well as survivors of cancer through its Patient and Patient Support Initiative (PaPSI).
Partnership working between health professionals and patients/carers on the objectives below:
2. Information: to consider what information is available at various steps of patient journey; whether it needs updating; translation into common Asian languages depending on the patients we serve; help develop written, audio, tablet and video materials.
3. Communication: to support health professionals in communicating effectively with this group of patients eg is it meeting their needs, how we can improve it, role of interpreters and health professionals, giving patients more effective choice. We run two Cross Cultural Communication Skills Training Courses based on Cultural Humility model each year to help with this objective.
4. Promote Cancer Awareness: Help develop effective programme to raise cancer awareness in Asian communities.
5. Promote Research and participation in clinical trials: Give their input to various research projects and represent interest of Asian patients, help increase participation of these patients in various research trials.
